About $4.3 million in federal stimulus funds has been awarded to San Bernardino Community College District for job development within the Southern California Transportation Corridor.

The investment will help train college students in vocational, maintenance and management careers in the increasingly high-tech transportation logistics industry. San Bernardino Valley College will directly receive about $2 million. The rest will be shared with Long Beach City College, East Los Angeles College and Riverside Community College.

Matthew Isaac, the college district's director for economic development and corporate training, estimates that the Recovery Act grant from the U.S. Department of Labor will have 900 people working within three years in the following industries: truck and diesel transportation and repair, warehousing, supply chain management, goods movement, and safety and security at the ports.

"The stimulus funds will help create a workforce and attract logistics businesses for the busiest transportation corridor in the nation," said Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter, who is chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Inland Empire Transportation Issues.

This summer begins the first free workforce training classes for careers in the logistics industry. Those interested in the training should call the San Bernardino Community College District at (909) 382-4001.

You Count! Complete the U.S. Census Questionnaire. PDF Print E-mail

As a member of the California State Assembly Select Committee on the Census, I am proud to be part of the effort to make sure everyone is counted in California.

April 1, 2010 is National Census Day. The U.S. Census Bureau has asked us to use this day as a point of reference for sending your completed forms back in the mail. I sincerely thank each of you who have already sent back a completed Census form.

Our community depends on you to be a part of this national effort.

Every year, the federal government distributes more than $400 billion to state, local and tribal governments based on the data they receive from the Census. Leaders use this data to guide planning decisions on where to build new roads, hospitals, child-care and senior citizen centers, schools and more. Data also determines the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as redistricting of the State Legislature and other districts.

For the first time in its 160-year history, California could lose a congressional seat. Every person living in California must be counted. This includes people of all ages, races and ethnic groups. During these economic times, California can't afford to lose our voice in Washington, D.C. or the dollars that support our schools, hospitals and public safety.

Participation in the 2010 Census is easy, important, and safe - your personal information cannot be shared with anyone or used against you. This is one of the shortest census forms in history, the 2010 Census form asks 10 questions and it only takes about 10 minutes to complete.

You can visit any of the Questionnaire Assistance Centers (QAC) in our area for help with the form. Visit www.californiacompletecount.org/census_e-center/finder to find the QAC closest to you.
